Record West Indies performance keeps New Zealand from winning in Christchurch

Record West Indies performance keeps New Zealand from winning in Christchurch  Justin Greaves, Shai Hope, and Kemar Roach helped the West Indies score the biggest fourth innings total in over 80 years during the Test match. An unbeaten double century from Justin Greaves, 140 from Shai Hope, and a fighting fifty from Kemar Roach saved the West Indies from losing in the first Test against New Zealand in Christchurch. The tourists ended the day at 457/6, which is the highest fourth innings total in history outside of the 654/6 England made in a famous timeless Test match in Durban back in 1939 against South Africa. The draw also gave the West Indies their first points in the new World Test Championship cycle, after they had five losses to start the campaign. The West Indies started the day at 212/4 chasing 531, with Greaves on 55 and joining Hope, who had just made a century on the evening of day four. The pair added 56 runs together, before Hope was dismissed by a short-ball from Jacob Duffy.Tevin Imlach (6) was out lbw to Zak Foulkes shortly after, which brought Kemar Roach into the innings. Initially, Roach played more aggressively in pursuit of an unlikely win.Roach and Greaves were mostly calm during the middle session, scoring 104 runs together. However, since the scoring rate wasn't fast enough for a win, they slowed down to avoid losing the match.Greaves, who was dealing with cramps and was treated multiple times in the last session, still managed to score his first Test double century with a powerful shot over the gully.Kemar Roach, who was very solid at the other end, ended the day on 58* off 233 balls. He reached his first Test fifty in just 110 deliveries.Greaves, who won the Player of the Match award, praised his batting partner."Kemar, the senior pro, guided me all the way," he said on the television broadcast."Coach (Daren Sammy) told me 'once you get in, stay in.'"To be a part of history is exciting, but for me, it's one day at a time. For us, it was just about getting into the last session - 100 runs in the last session - but losing Shai was a big thing for us."  The teams are heading to Wellington for the second Test, which starts on December 10.
